Kleinschmidt Certified as Electronic Truck Manifest Hosted Solution Provider by U.S. Customs and Border Protection

Deerfield, Illinois – January 9, 2006 – Kleinschmidt has been certified to provide a hosted solution that will allow motor carriers to meet the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) requirements for the ACE Electronic Truck Manifest program. The ACE Electronic Truck Manifest program helps create a secure and streamlined environment for processing and releasing cargo at the land borders. ACE is currently in pilot at both northern and southern border crossing sites. Upon completion of the pilot, ACE will be mandatory for motor carriers transporting freight into the United States.

The CBP certification process includes thirteen separate tests. The tests were designed to validate the ability of the developer’s software to interact with ACE. Kleinschmidt is the only company certified by CBP as both a Value-Added Network for ACE and hosted solution. Kleinschmidt can thus provide a complete solution, by meeting the needs of motor carriers who are EDI capable as well as those who are not.

ACE requires motor carriers to submit complete manifest information, including conveyance, equipment, crew, passenger, and detailed shipment information. For most shipments, this must be submitted at least an hour before the freight arrives at the border. Kleinschmidt’s hosted solution allows a motor carrier to meet all CBP’s requirements. It also includes additional features, such as proactive notification of all CBP status messages and the ability to create templates for repetitive shipments.

Kleinschmidt is a premier Electronic Commerce Company with a long history of leadership. It is located in Deerfield, Illinois and is the only provider that owns and operates a 24 x 7 second production site in the United States.

Disaster Recovery Upgrade

Kleinschmidt Inc. announced today that it has completed the computer system upgrade of its second production site. This upgrade, started in June 2001, enables Kleinschmidt customers to seamlessly switch between two diverse networks at any time, test disaster recovery preparedness as needed, and be assured that, if a disaster were to occur, electronic communication with their trading partners would not be interrupted. Kleinschmidt is now the only US-based EC Value Added Network (VAN) to offer fully functional non-stop disaster recovery to its customers and their trading partners.

Twenty-four by seven availability of the network is critical to our customers and their trading partners,” said Harry Gaples, President and CEO of Kleinschmidt Inc. “Kleinschmidt was the first network to provide twenty-four by seven disaster recovery when we opened our disaster recovery site in 1997. And, we are the first to offer two fully functional production sites in 2001.”

The Kleinschmidt network consists of twenty fault-tolerant Tandem Himalaya S74000 CPU’s, organized as two linked on-line production systems. Each system has 10 CPU’s. One system is located at the main facility in Deerfield, IL. The other system is in Rondout, IL (Kleinschmidt North).

The Deerfield facility is connected via ATM to Kleinschmidt North by two diverse T3 lines, one heading east and one heading west, which form a diverse fault-tolerant fiber ring. System processes are run in a fault-tolerant environment so that a CPU failure or other component failure will not interrupt system processes. Kleinschmidt has never experienced a data loss because of a hardware failure. Each system has enough capacity to maintain Kleinschmidt’s day-to-day operations on its own.

Kleinschmidt Inc. began providing supply-chain services in 1979. Offering a full range of premier E-Commerce services, Kleinschmidt is the EC Gateway for many industries. EPIRA Web-Enabled Supply Chain Solution for Rail Industry Suppliers

Harry Gaples, CEO Kleinschmidt Inc., announced today a substantial reduction in the monthly charge for all suppliers to the rail industry that utilize the EPIRA Web Application. Effective February 1, 2005, the monthly charge paid by EPIRA customers will be reduced by more than thirty-three percent.

“Kleinschmidt prides itself on providing state of the art Web Applications at a competitive price,” said Mr. Gaples. “Lowering the monthly charge for EPIRA customers to $20.00 will result in considerable savings for vendors who supply products and services to the railroads.”

The supply-chain solution, EPIRA (Electronic Purchasing and Invoicing Rail Application) allows rail vendors to receive purchase orders and send invoices via the Internet without any investment in software. For North American Railroads, EPIRA easily integrates into existing internal systems and allows flexibility for any future enhancements.

North American Railroads, using existing industry standard EDI formats, transmit the purchase orders (POs) to Kleinschmidt where the data is stored using XML. Using any browser, a vendor can view their POs via the Internet. Once an order has been filled, the vendor is able to simply enter the invoice amount and a few other pieces of information via the Internet and an invoice in an existing industry standard EDI format is transmitted back to the railroad for payment. In addition, Kleinschmidt can provide the POs to the vendor in their preferred format if they do not want to view them via the Internet.

Kleinschmidt is a premier Electronic Commerce Company with a long history of leadership. It is located in Deerfield, Illinois and are the only provider that owns and operates a 24 x 7 second production site in the United States.

Offering a full range of premier E-Commerce services, Kleinschmidt has the most reliable and flexible EC solutions in the industry. Its event-driven, real-time message processing system is implemented as two diversely connected production sites, accessible via multiple Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and multiple local access phone providers. Redundant power sources and multiple fault-tolerant computer systems ensure outstanding availability.

Kleinschmidt provides such diverse products as in-network translation, XML and EDI message routing, Railcar location and tracking services, and ASP services. Kleinschmidt develops custom Web Applications to provide cost-effective solutions for specific business needs for EDI and non-EDI capable partners. The reliability and flexibility of Kleinschmidt’s service is attributed to the use of fault-tolerant Tandem computers, the method in which system software has been implemented, the existence of power and communication redundancy, and unparalleled customer service

MQ Connectivity Option For U.S. Customs Trading Partners

Kleinschmidt Inc. announced today that it has successfully implemented MQ Series communication with U.S. Customs. This U.S. Government Agency is in the process of replacing older, less reliable communication with MQ. MQ Series enables application programs to communicate with each other using messages and queues. It is believed MQ will help eliminate the delays encountered by some companies using current communication options with U.S. Customs.

The global nature of the supply chain process demands all communication be real-time, secure and reliable. Kleinschmidt will be providing real-time, secure, reliable and fully automated business-to-business (B2B) communication between U.S. Customs and its trading partners. What sets Kleinschmidt’s service apart from others is that it is fault-tolerant and redundant. By providing diverse connections to both of Kleinschmidt’s production sites, U.S. Customs and their trading partners will enjoy the industry’s only fully redundant communication process. Kleinschmidt’s state of the art network, consisting of three Tandem Himalaya K20000 computers and one Tandem S72000, provides 24 x 7 fault-tolerant service.

Following the successful testing and implementation of MQ, Kleinschmidt now offers MQ as a connectivity option for all its customers. Harry Gaples, President of Kleinschmidt, said, “The addition of MQ is a continuation of our practice of supporting the communication method and protocol preferred by each of our customers and their trading partners.”

In addition to MQ, Kleinschmidt offers the largest number of communication options in the industry today. These communication options, part of the value-added services that are provided to all trading partners, include frame-relay, TCP/IP, FTP, ISDN, SNA, Leased Line, Asynchronous, Bisynchronous, Dial-in, Dial-out, and of course the Internet. Having the widest selection of communication options available in the industry allows each trading partner to choose the method that best suits its business communication requirements.

Kleinschmidt will be converting all data exchanged between Kleinschmidt and U.S. Customs from SNA communication to MQ. Any new or existing Kleinschmidt customers that wish to trade electronically with U.S. Customs in ASC X12 Version 4010, no matter how they choose to communicate with Kleinschmidt, will immediately have satisfied the agency’s request for MQ.

Real-time Web-Enabled Supply Chain Solution for Rail Customers

Building on over 20 years of expertise in rail supply-chain monitoring, Kleinschmidt announced today the availability of a real-time web enabled supply-chain solution for companies that ship or receive freight via North American Railroads. The supply-chain solution, Rail-ETA, allows rail shippers and consignees to view rail shipment information and predicts equipment arrival based on CLMs for both loaded and empty moves.

Using a combination of railroad supplied CLMs and shipper-supplied shipment information, Rail-ETA enables shippers to provide their customers with real-time in-transit visibility of inbound rail shipments, via the Internet. A unique logon and shipper maintained customer codes ensure that only shipments destined for a specific consignee are viewable by that consignee. In addition, the consignee can view a subset of the shipments by purchase order (PO) number or standard transportation commodity code (STCC). Shippers can monitor outbound rail shipments by plant or other criteria. Shippers can also provide their draymen with the capability to receive advance notification of trailer or container arrival.

Rail-ETA provides the user with a record of the movement of a shipment from origin to destination, the estimated time of arrival (ETA) for each reporting point, and other information based on documents supplied via Electronic Data Interchange (EDI). The ETA is based on historical data, collected from actual movements of railcars using Kleinschmidt’s proven railcar-monitoring applications and includes a standard deviation and sample size.

Benefits include the ability to receive automatic notification of shipments via email based on customer criteria including late shipments, bad order, or shipments not moving. Pro-active notification improves customer service. Standard reports, such as lane specific reports, enable shippers to compare performance via various routes from origin to destination. Other reports provide the time railcars are at manufacturing plants, at customer sites, and in storage.

Built in macros allow the user to retrieve shipment information based on easy to use keywords, such as Moving, Late, and All. Using the default, or the keyword, “Moving” displays all equipment in-transit, “Late” displays all equipment which Rail-ETA calculates as arriving late, and “All” displays both in-transit and equipment at destination. In addition to viewing the information on the Web, the data can be provided in other formats including a comma-delimited file, email or XML.
